LinkedIn SDE Full Loop Recap: What Technical Screen, AI Coding, Algorithms, and System Design Are Really Testing

If you go through the full LinkedIn SDE interview process, one thing becomes clear very quickly: this is not a loop where every round is evaluating the same skill in a slightly different form. The structure is much more deliberate than that.

From the initial technical screen all the way to the full loop, each round looks at you from a different angle:

  • are your technical foundations and coding basics solid
  • do you truly understand the systems you claim to have built
  • can you work with AI tools without becoming dependent on them
  • can you drive a system design discussion instead of waiting to be led

That is why LinkedIn is not the kind of process where “doing enough LeetCode” automatically makes you safe. Many candidates pass the screen and still get separated sharply in the later rounds.


Round 1: Technical Screen (Fundamentals + LeetCode)

The first round is essentially a technical filter, usually around one hour.

First 15 minutes: foundational technical Q&A

The first fifteen minutes are often technical fundamentals, though the exact content depends heavily on your role and background.

For backend-oriented roles, common areas include:

  • networking
  • operating systems
  • databases
  • distributed systems

Typical examples:

  • TCP details
  • the difference between threads and processes
  • database index principles
  • distributed consistency topics

This section is short, but it serves an important purpose: it tells the interviewer whether you only have coding practice, or whether you also have real systems knowledge.

Final 45 minutes: standard LeetCode-style coding

The remaining forty-five minutes are typically a standard coding problem in CoderPad. The interviewer usually pastes the problem statement directly into the editor and expects you to implement the solution live.

One very important detail:

  • the code may not need to literally run
  • but the logic must be complete
  • edge cases must be addressed
  • and you must be able to dry run it manually

So even this round is not only about finishing code. LinkedIn cares quite a lot about whether you can explain your solution clearly while writing it.

Strong performance here usually gets you into the full loop.


Full Loop Overview: Four Rounds, Four Different Dimensions

After the technical screen, the full loop usually consists of four one-hour rounds:

  • host manager
  • coding with AI
  • algorithms
  • system design

The intensity is not low, and the emphasis of each round is very different.

That is what makes LinkedIn somewhat special:

it is not just four algorithm rounds in a row. It is four different ways of checking whether you look like a complete engineer.


Host Manager: Technical Resume Deep Dive

This round is not a traditional behavioral interview, and it is usually not made of formulaic BQ prompts either.

It feels much more like:

a technically driven resume deep dive

The interviewer usually does not walk line by line through your resume. Instead, they pick one or two projects that seem most technically meaningful and then dig deeply into those.

What this round is actually looking for

The interviewer usually cares about:

  • what your role in the system really was
  • what critical decisions you personally made
  • what the tradeoffs were
  • what the hardest problems actually were
  • what you would redesign now

There are rarely perfect answers here. The main question is whether you truly understand the system you worked on, not whether you can say “I used X technology.”

So if your project experience only exists at the level of:

  • I used this tool
  • I touched that service

this round can become very uncomfortable.
LinkedIn wants to hear reasoning, not just technology names.


Coding with AI: Not Whether You Can Use AI, But Whether You Can Use It Correctly

This round also happens in CoderPad, but the interviewer allows you to use built-in LLM tools to assist with coding.

However, there is one critical reality:

these models are intentionally much weaker than the GPT or Gemini tools most candidates are used to.

Their understanding and code quality are noticeably worse.

The problem itself is still coding-focused

The question is usually still algorithmic or logic-oriented. Often you are given a base code framework and asked to:

  • implement new functionality
  • or fix an existing bug

So at the surface level, it still feels like a coding round.

What is really being evaluated

The deeper evaluation is not whether the AI can generate working code for you. It is:

  • how you construct prompts
  • how you guide the model
  • whether you can inspect and judge its output correctly

The interviewer cares a lot about whether your understanding of LLMs is realistic.

The biggest mistake here is:

  • relying on the model too much
  • trusting its output blindly

If the model produces something that sounds plausible but is actually flawed, you are expected to:

  • catch the issue
  • explain clearly why it is wrong
  • describe how to fix it

So this round is much closer to:

testing whether you can collaborate with AI in a real engineering environment without surrendering judgment to it.


Algorithms: Standard Difficulty, but Follow-up Determines Level

The algorithms round is the most traditional one. In one hour, you often get two coding questions in CoderPad.

The baseline expectations

The code may not need to be executed, but you must be able to:

  • dry run it
  • explain time complexity
  • explain space complexity

That part sounds standard, but the follow-ups are what really matter.

Almost every problem gets follow-up discussion

Typical follow-up directions include:

  • changing data scale
  • changing constraints
  • asking for a different perspective on the same problem

Most of the time, you do not need to fully code the follow-up. But you do need to explain:

  • whether the nature of the problem has changed
  • whether the current solution still extends
  • how the complexity would change if it does

So this round still tests algorithmic fundamentals, but at a higher level it is also testing:

  • whether you stay stable under pressure
  • whether your explanation remains organized
  • whether you only know the first solution or can think beyond it

This is why the round is not “solve and stop.” It is “solve, then keep going.”


System Design: The Candidate-Led Round

System design is the final round, and it is the most open-ended one.

The overall structure usually resembles the classic Hello Interview flow:

  • requirements clarification
  • API design
  • high-level architecture
  • database schema
  • core flows
  • a deeper dive into one key area

The most important characteristic

In many cases, this round is candidate-led.

That means:

  • you need to actively drive the discussion
  • you cannot just wait for prompts one step at a time
  • you must also respond continuously to interviewer concerns

Typical concerns include:

  • scalability
  • availability
  • latency
  • cost
  • consistency

Why LinkedIn system design needs targeted prep

Because the focus can vary dramatically depending on the team.

Some groups may lean toward:

  • AI infrastructure

and then the conversation may center on:

  • model serving
  • inference latency
  • resource scheduling

Other groups may lean toward:

  • ranking backend

and care more about:

  • feature retrieval
  • ranking logic
  • online inference

Still others may lean toward:

  • event-driven systems

with more emphasis on:

  • message queues
  • asynchronous processing
  • eventual consistency

So beyond generic design frameworks, it helps a lot to prepare specifically for the kind of team you are targeting. Otherwise your framework may look polished while still missing the actual design concerns of that group.


What LinkedIn Is Really Screening For

If you connect the full process, LinkedIn is not really screening for “who solved the most problems.”

It is screening for whether you look ready for a modern engineering environment.

The technical screen checks:

  • foundation
  • coding clarity

The host manager round checks:

  • whether you truly understand your own projects

The AI coding round checks:

  • whether you can use LLMs correctly without being misled by them

The algorithms round checks:

  • whether your fundamentals are stable
  • whether you can handle follow-up pressure

The system design round checks:

  • whether you can independently drive an open-ended technical discussion

That is why the process feels coherent even though the rounds are very different.
